It appears to have been part of the 1.5 documentation, which I no longer have since I've updated to 2.0.  So now I'm not sure whether it should be added, nor what it does.

Where did you hear this? *.pbxuser and *.mode* files are completely optional and don't have to be checked into the repository. There's only one project bundle file that must be checked in, and it's project.pbxproj.
