How to see the compiler command / output??

Hi,
I'm sure this has been covered already but I can't find it with the list search engine.

I need to be able to see both the compiler command line and the output from invoking the compiler as I am developing. One reason in particular is that I am using cmake to generate xcode projects and I need to be sure that all of the flags I am specifying are actually being used. Even visualstudio lets you do this so there must be some way... Since I'm rather new to developing on a mac (migrated from gmake/emacs on linux) I tried opening up every type of "log" window I could, but I couldn't find the output anywhere.

Thanks-- I'm looking forward to using xcode.
