Well, I was finally able to build my app's help book. Symptom 1 remains -
Help > Mac Help does not work; indeed, the Help Viewer's own Help does not
work, which is pretty ironic. But I was able to get my app to work.
Just for the record, there seem to be two main tricks. First, in the magic
"AppleTitle" meta tag, the name "AppleTitle" is apparently case-sensitive.
Second, if you have a failure, then the next time before you build, you must
change the bundle identifier of your project, and clean and build, in order
to defeat the Help Viewers accursed caching mechanism. m.
PS Goat sacrifice may also be helpful.
PPS Oh, one more hint. The new Help Indexer will let you build two different
kinds of index. But don't build both, even though it will let you. The
reason is that if you do, then when the user does a search on your help,
there will be double hits for the same pages.
PPPS One final note: the new Help Viewer is really bad - a big step
backwards. Instead of showing the "description" tag for hits from a search
as lines in the window, these are relegated to little floating helptags.
That's really atrocious UI, especially considering how important this
information can be. The user will probably never even discover the existence
of these "description" tags (which is pretty annoying considering the days
and days I spent creating them).
