Thanks, that makes sense. I wondered if maybe the compiler was just being used for preprocessing the files.  I will try to pay closer attention next time I'm editing my C++ sources, and see if I can narrow down the problem.

I'm pretty sure the compiler isn't involved in indexing.  If you're seeing background crashes from gcc, you might want to try turning off predictive compilation.  Either way, I'd suggest filing a bug report.
