I agree with the notion that optimizing during development can be counter productive. However, one can't always blame the compiler for poorly optimized code. Function calls and array assignments are notoriously difficult for a compiler to optimize. It often takes "a priori" knowledge to know that a particular call or array access or global reference is "safe". And while humans are terrific at recognizing *new* patterns, machines aren't. They can only recognize the patterns they've been trained to recognize.
