Can you sample gdb and Xcode while this is going on? That would give
us some more solid data to work on.

stdout, stderr, and or files. When gdb hits these functions, I
usually just pass over them using "step over" (next). Then, the
debugger locks for as much as several minutes, chugging up the
processor, during which time I suppose it's "trying" to do I/O!!
What's going on here? Has anyone seen this? Workarounds?
