I really don't know what, if any, discussion group this would fit
with, but I know there are some smart people out there, perhaps even
a few with backgrounds in electrical engineering, and I just had to
share this. I wrote to my ISP to complain about my DSL modem needing
to be powered off/on every month or so. I was wondering if there were
any upgrades available for the hardware seeing as how I'd had mine
for the past three years. Here's the response I received:
"In a nutshell, DSL works based on electrical theory, and when your
loop is above X feet electrically (depending on what speed you're
running at), electrical interference builds up on the line, and it
occasionally needs to be rebooted to remove this resistance buildup.
This can sometimes take weeks, and it's not uncommon to for some DSL
lines to need a reboot every month or two."
I'm no expert on electricity, but ... what?
Rob
