"In a nutshell, DSL works based on electrical theory, and when your
loop is above X feet electrically (depending on what speed you're
running at), electrical interference builds up on the line, and it
occasionally needs to be rebooted to remove this resistance
buildup. This can sometimes take weeks, and it's not uncommon to
for some DSL lines to need a reboot every month or two."
I'm no expert on electricity, but ... what?
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. You're telling me your phone company has
installed ground-temperature superconductors? Why haven't they
announced this incredible breakthrough?
Superconduction is about the only way I could see that happening. I
think it's far more likely that they're just B.S.ing you. They *are*
a phone company, after all; they'd feel they were letting their
customers down if they didn't lie about *something*.
'course, I could be wrong; I am an electrical engineer, but I'm no
specialist on transmission lines. I'd love to hear how this could be
the case, though.
It reminds me of a Dilbert comic, where the PHB is told to unplug his
network cable and shake it around in the bin, to get all those stuck
1's out. :)
Hmm... let's see, how to make this on topic... um, can any of the
Xcode guys validate Xcode's compatibility or resistibility to such
long-term build ups? Should Xcode be shut down once a month to allow
this discharge? Could this 'cause battery explosions on my
Powerbook? ;)
