Honestly, I'd just build the application without prebinding and then
do some timings to see how much the launch time regresses. I doubt it
will be worth the effort to try and use prebinding.

As it happens pre-binding isn't working in my build right now (you
mentioned fragile ;) and I'm wondering how much benefit I might

This doesn't answer your actual question, but you are much better off
just turning off prebinding in the target build settings. Prebinding
is a fairly fragile process that isn't necessary in the vast majority
of cases since 10.3.4 came out.
