Unix whizitude isn't necessary. Activity Monitor is your friend. Its
System Memory tab shows Page ins/outs as two numeric counters.
I also keep an eye on the Disk Activity graph. A moving bright shiny thing
is easier to glance at than two numbers, and this graph can be displayed in
the app's Dock icon.
There are also free or shareware GUI tools that have smaller displays than
Activity Monitor. I think one was suggested the last time I recommended
Activity Monitor on this list. It may even have been the last time iTunes
stuttering was mentioned.
