Since I will eventually have a nib, XCode's docs recommend I use

That's what they recommend? Sounds weird, since most CVS users
today (including Apple) are moving to Subversion that doesn't
support tar-wrapped files anyway.
So, what's the recommended replacement for wrappers?
To place an example where svn is inferior to cvs, I stuff documents
made with Pages.app into a svn repository to get version control.
Often, Pages liberately removes the .svn directory inside the
document bundle. Subversion obviously can't handle this situation
at all, it chokes by marking the entire bundle with a ~ and refuses
to commit.
While the example isn't directly Xcode, is there a known workaround
for such situations?
There's no easy work around. It has been filed as an issue against
SVN (http://subversion.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=707) but
still no fix. The only option I can think of is to use SVK (http://
svk.bestpractical.com/) which does not use per-directory folders but
rather a central one in your home folder. However, this does not have
Xcode support.
