libtool -static vs. ranlib

The ranlib/libtool manpage says I should prefer libtool -static over
ranlib. Is there any technical reason for this? Both seem to work
fine, but libtool -static gives a warning about .o files that have no
symbols, which is annoying when you have a zero-warnings policy. Ranlib
doesn't give this warning, so I'm leaning towards using that despite
what the manpage says.
