An iCode development tool! That's a great idea. I bet there are lots
of us who would love to have something like this. So long as source
files can be copied into the full-blown Xcode when and if the need
arises, what's the down side?

Agreed, but Xcode is a pro-app, not an iApp [*], so the design goal has to be flexibility rather than convenience - and with flexibility, also complexity.

That said, I would like to see some sort of "iCode" development tool.
Something really simple, intended to be used only for building Cocoa
+ObjC based applications / bundles with minimum fuss and maximum
convenience. I don't know. Perhaps it's a bad idea. Perhaps
developers are inherently pro-users, and in no need of an entry level
tool.

On the other hand perhaps you're right. As a Macintosh user I want
intuitive user interface. In other words, I want my apps to do
what I expect without learning how they work. That's why Mac UI
design takes so much more work than other platforms. To be frank,
that's the expectation Apple set itself up for when it unveiled
Xcode by saying it was bringing Apple's world class UI know-how to
development tools. To me, that's the campaign promise that I want
to hold Xcode to now that's it's been elected the sole Mac IDE.
Sometimes unreasonable is good.

Keep filing bug reports and enhancement requests.
