I agree but I think you misunderstand my position. I subscribe to the idea that simple things should be done simply and complex things should be possible. With a basic project you shouldn't be put into a state where you're getting link errors because you mistakenly drag the same file into the project twice.

Agreed, but Xcode is a pro-app, not an iApp [*], so the design goal has to be flexibility rather than convenience - and with flexibility, also complexity.

I sympathize with the issues of flexibility, but I'm concerned that attitude can lead to complacency. I also don't necessarily accept the argument that you can't have both. I know Apple employs human interface design specialists. I have to believe one of those people could spend a couple weeks with Xcode and come up with a lot of improvements.

That said, I would like to see some sort of "iCode" development tool. Something really simple, intended to be used only for building Cocoa+ObjC based applications / bundles with minimum fuss and maximum convenience.

My guess would be it's not practical to expect Apple to invest in another IDE, but it might be possible to add the ability to "skin" Xcode. It already has features to change the project layout and customize menu shortcuts. Those ideas could be taken further. For example, if you just use Xcode for AppleScript Studio the current experience must be overwhelming.
