Agreed, but Xcode is a pro-app, not an iApp [*], so the design goal
has to be flexibility rather than convenience - and with
flexibility, also complexity.
I sympathize with the issues of flexibility, but I'm concerned that
attitude can lead to complacency. I also don't necessarily accept
the argument that you can't have both. I know Apple employs human
interface design specialists. I have to believe one of those people
could spend a couple weeks with Xcode and come up with a lot of
improvements.
That said, I would like to see some sort of "iCode" development
tool. Something really simple, intended to be used only for
building Cocoa+ObjC based applications / bundles with minimum fuss
and maximum convenience.
My guess would be it's not practical to expect Apple to invest in
another IDE, but it might be possible to add the ability to "skin"
Xcode. It already has features to change the project layout and
customize menu shortcuts. Those ideas could be taken further. For
example, if you just use Xcode for AppleScript Studio the current
experience must be overwhelming.
