I didn't want to do this either (it didn't feel clean). It was a stop-gap to
get us working again.

As I originally posted, this was something happening on a co-worker's
machine. He's about 1800 miles away from me (I did leave that bit out), so
it's hard for me to look over his shoulder and see what his build logs were.
:-) I looked into it myself this morning on my own machine, and couldn't get
it to reproduce. After I spoke with my co-worker further about it, it seems
it was some errors on his part. So, all's better now.
