XCode hangs when attempting to browse or edit a Core Data Model

Dear List,
I am at my wits end with XCode in this regard. Since yesterday XCode
refuses to edit or browse a Core Data Model. I have completely
removed the Developer Tools (including all plugins and preferences)
and reinstalled, I have reinstalled both 2.2 and 2.2.1 without it
making any difference. I have checked that the models are OK because
if I copy them over to another machine they work just fine. When I
click on a model in XCode it goes away with the spinning ball of
death and never returns. Scratching around in Activity Viewer shows
that XCode is not responding, although the CPU usage goes up very
high (on the order of 80 to 90%) but there is nothing in any of the
console, system or crash logs. I really do not want to have to trash
my hard disk and reinstall the OS, does anyone have any ideas.
