Debugger won't handle release build

I've got some code that's crashing only on PowerPC release builds. So
I'm trying to debug it. I've turned on Generate Debug Symbols (-
gfull). Any time I set a breakpoint, I get
Previous frame inner to this frame (corrupt stack?)
and GDB refuses to go further.
I've switched from DWARF to Stabs. Not zerolinking.
I don't recall anything relevant to this. I'm certainly able to debug
the debug build on a PowerPC machine.
