Speed drop after QuickTime and iTunes updates

I'm experimenting with an external sort in Xcode 2.3. After installing the QuickTime 7.1.2 and iTunes 6.0.5 updates on 7/11, my disk to disk sorting speed dropped from 10-15 mbytes/sec to 4-5. The system is an 800 mhz G4 PowerBook. I updated to Tiger 10.4.7 on 6/27, but still got the faster sorting rates as late as 7/10. I've fiddled with a lot of project settings in Xcode, and tried turning off disk journaling, all to no effect.

Anyone have an idea what's going on here? I'd appreciate any suggestions on possible solutions or analytical approaches. I'm new to Xcode and its tools, so obvious answers may be just what I need.

Thanks,

Dave Ring
