I think Xcode is Apple's way to get developers to buy the fastest hardware
Apple sells. :-) maybe :-(
It's painful to compare Xcode's speed at opening, viewing and editing plain
ASCII text files with CodeWarrior. Heck, is Xcode finally faster on an
Intel box, running natively, compared with CodeWarrior running under
emulation...
Do I wish Apple put in the effort to speed up the text editor over adding
whiz-bang features? Yes. Do I believe it will ever happen? No.
I think, if Xcode weren't produced in a 'monopolistic' fashion [by releasing
it for free by burying the cost in other products], but rather as a real
product, and licensed the system header's like they did before to third
parties, that had to be purchased and self supporting within Apple, that
there would be a chance for a third-party developer to produce a competing
IDE. As it is now, a company like Metrowerks can't possibly happen again
because even cheap and fabulous doesn't compete [and can't get funding]
against free and acceptable.
Note, this is not to slag Apple engineering, as they work hard at improving
Xcode, and it's all about priorities... And the frequency of me pounding on
my laptop because Xcode has/is doing something that is totally frustrating
me has gone down quite a bit since about Xcode 2.0/2.1...
