I suspect the problem is that the underlying Cocoa / Unicode / Quartz
text layer has some major inefficiencies, and that fixing that is not
a priority for the team that look after it because Xcode users are
not a big population.

Well, only 1% of our users are reporting an issue with large
files, and they always can use an external editor in the few cases
where they really need to (if they don't control the source code).
So even though that's a very important issue, if we were able to
get newFeatureB implemented in time for release 2.4, that would
increase the productivity of 64% of our users. And fixing bugC
would similarly improve life for 85% of our users. So leave the
editor as it is for the moment and continue with your
investigation into the implications of your proposed fix for bugC.
Once that's finished, go back to implementing newFeatureB.
Then I wonder where they got the time to add a progress bar for
loading? IMHO that time should have been spent fixing the problem
itself instead of adding eye candy on top. To the lucky ones of you
who have only >20kB source files, it's not just editing that
becomes painfully slow but it's even more painful having to wait
several seconds in the debugger every time the code steps in or out
of a large file.
