Worked for me...  Core Duo mini, 10.4.5, no .hidden:
  sudo /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a v /usr

Maybe force Finder to reread from disk.  Logout and login again.
I can see /usr in Open dialogs, too, e.g. TextEdit.app.
