Referring to the documentation (how embarrassing), it says that
this is only supported on HP-UX.

Sigh. More than 1.5 *years* later, we still don't have support for
this.

It seems to be worse than that. If I single-step over a fork(), the
child process dies; the crash log sez:
Exception: EXC_BREAKPOINT (0x0006)
so it looks like gdb isn't really behaving itself.
For grins, I filed a bug report (rdar://4590979).
