Reading through it, it seems pretty cool, but it seems like it might be a little bit of overkill, though. But who knows, it might actually be the final solution.

So I guess, a different question could be, how do other people manage large projects that have multiyear maintenance expectations? Do other people manually manage the projects?

It's the only build generator I know of that can generate native Xcode
projects (in addition to the usual list of suspects, Visual Studio,
Makefiles, etc). For OS X, it can generate both Makefiles and Xcode
projects, so you get to pick which you want to use.
