I just want to chime in here, and this is in no way a comment on
anything Steve did. It's more in the way of venting against what I see
as a bad trend.
I think that mixing version control into the code development IDE is
just Wrong. Version control is hard enough with dedicated tools. Letting
the IDE developers have a whack at introducing their own bugs is asking
for serious trouble. I always do my checkins/outs with a separate app.
Sometimes on the command line if I'm really paranoid, but SmartCVS
actually works pretty well too.
Having said that, I will share my recent experiences in Visual Studio
Land. Visual Studio 8 is, IMHO, a POS in many ways. (For fairness, Xcode
is a POS in its charming ways too. Don't get me started about linking
issues.) And they-who-must-not-be-named have set things up so that it is
intimately connected to Visual Source Safe (their version control
system), and they also caution you that "All project creation and
manipulation within VSS should be performed by using the integrated VSS
support menus within Visual Studio .NET - don't use VSS Explorer for
this." This does not make me feel warm and fuzzy. And since we use CVS
for version control, I'm wondering what magic I don't know about that's
going to trip me up later. As I said, integrating things this way is
just Wrong.
All my opinion, of course. :-)
Best regards to all,
Rush
