Thanks, that turns out to be the key that I was missing.  Also, I am advised
that it's important this be a static library and not dynamic, to "insure"
that it takes precedence of the system's library installed in /usr/lib/.

An example of the complete solution to the problem of "over-riding" a system
library is here:
