It turns out that I'm not very picky. I seem to do fine with many of the layouts. But in this case my switch to "all-in-one" was motivated by the fact that the debug console now appears in a separate window in the other modes, instead of in an attached drawer.  If I could get the debug console to show up in a pane, I'd probably stick with "mostly all-in-one" or whatever it's called.
