This isn't really related to Xcode any longer. Is there a better place to discuss this? <http://lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo> doesn't seem to contain a compiler list (as was noted on perfoptimization-dev earlier this week).

I'm afraid I'm not the best person to answer concerning the rationale of certain parts of the C++ standard. That's not to imply that I'm against the rationale or don't believe a good one exists, just that it isn't my area expertise. Indeed my experience is that there are usually some very good rationales once you find the right people to ask.
