An alternative (used for example when checking out the TextMate bundles SVN) is to use the LC_CTYPE environment variable. I think this is more accurate than LANG when the goal is only to use a specific char encoding.

export LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8

(for more options, see http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/basedefs/xbd_chap07.html)

Hello? Isn't UTF-8 the native encoding for Darwin? I can't remember the exact source of our Subversion client

[~/GameHouse] % svn --version
svn, version 1.3.2 (r19776)
   compiled Jun 5 2006, 13:13:11

but I wonder if someone misconfigured it.

Is anyone using Subversion with non-ASCII filenames

Yes, we do. Japanese ones like yours, as it happens.

The solution to your problem is to set your LANG environment variable e.g. in your .profile. In your case, you probably want something like

  export LANG=en_US.UTF-8

If you do that, you should find that Subversion works the way you want.

Kind regards,

Alastair.
