Yes, debating on the list
Have you ever attended a real debate? A debate is a contest, with
winners and losers. I don't consider these discussions debates
because even when they become heated, these discussions don't have
winners or losers.
is a waste of everybody's time.
I don't consider it a waste of my time and I've seen other people
state that they derive benefit from these kinds of discussions. There
will always be threads that can be considered a waste of time to some
people. I see very technical, on-topic threads on carbon-dev and even
this list that are a waste of my time because they relate to issues
that are not relevant to me, but I don't tell people they shouldn't
talk about those things. The fact that these discussions almost
always involve contributions from multiple participants is pretty
clear evidence in my mind that not everyone considers them a waste of
time.
The most productive course would be to file enhancement requests
for wanted features:

Speaking for myself, I find these kinds of threads can help me
understand the thinking behind the current approach, plus the pros
and cons of what I might want to request in Radar, which often
results in what I consider a better request when I *do* file a
request. Or I may decide not to file a request once I see things from
a different perspective. I would consider it a *bigger* waste of my
time to go off on my own submitting my personal wish list for a
program with which I am not very familiar.
These discussions, or "debates" as you like to call them, foster an
exchange of ideas and perspectives, and I don't consider that a waste
of time. Sometimes we even reassess our own positions when explaining
them to others.
It's also often appropriate to post a "how do I do this?" question
to the list, once you've searched the archives of course. You'll
either be told that it's possible and you just didn't know how, or
you'll be advised to file a bug report.
Agreed.
