Anyone else try running Xcode 2.4 on one of the new 8-core systems?
What I'm seeing is 8 files start compiling (as expected) and then they
seem to deadlock for a long (long!) time. We're talking 5 minutes to
compile 8 small vanilla C files. Then the next file gets compiled and
things get progressively faster the more files are compiled, until the
last few (out of 150-odd files) are running at "normal" speed.
I'm comparing this to a 3 GHz quad core, which is at least twice as fast
at building this project.
The 8-core has 16 GB of RAM, the 4-core has 12 GB.
Compile is being done from an external SATA drive. The same drive in
both cases.
Compiling a single file takes approximately the same time on both
systems, which I would expect as both are 3 GHz systems.
It seems like a serious memory bandwidth bottleneck, as the speed is
unchanged when the project is moved to a RAID subsystem.
Is there a way to reduce the number of cores being used? The purpose of
getting this box was not to speed compiles--I'm satisfied with the 4-
core speed.
Has anything in this area been addressed in Xcode 3.0?
