What I'm seeing is 8 files start compiling (as expected) and then they
seem to deadlock for a long (long!) time. We're talking 5 minutes to

things get progressively faster the more files are compiled, until the
last few (out of 150-odd files) are running at "normal" speed.

Is there a way to reduce the number of cores being used? The purpose of
getting this box was not to speed compiles--I'm satisfied with the 4-
core speed.

You can control this with PBXNumberOfParallelBuildSubtasks. See the "Expert Preferences Notes" from the help menu.
