Complex Subversion setup help needed

Let's say you have multiple Xcode projects that share common sources e.g.
several plugins sharing some API headers or common GUI sources. How should
you configure everything such that you could branch one or more plugin
project or the common sources independently?

Right now, the common sources are in one folder tree and the individual
plugin projects are in separate trees. Should I do the initial check-in of
the root folder containing all the trees or should I create separate
subversion projects for each tree?
