Documentation is a bit vague on the subject but here are some observations
on SVN and Xcode.
First off, I'm not using SVN locally nor am I using Apache. The URL is in
the form svn://serveraddress/repository
This server has a username and password set up on it that's NOT the OS X
login name.
I did the initial check-in using SmartSVN which apparently doesn't require
the command-line version of Subversion to be present. This is a pretty nice
client, btw. You can do all the usual Subversion tasks with it but since it
doesn't use the command-line stuff, Xcode's hooks don't know anything about
it.
So, what you need to do to get things to work is
1) install Subversion,
2) do the initial checkout. SmartSVN is fine for this.
3) Launch Terminal, cd to the working copy's directory.
4) Then execute any command to the remote server via Terminal that requires
authentication e.g. svn list
Subversion defaults to your login name but if you hit enter it'll ask you
for a username. You can then put in the correct username and password.
This authentication information is stored in your Keychain.
Then and only then are you able to use Xcode to talk to the server.
