For what it's worth, I want to make a comment, which is that I very much dislike the way the "Find" menu is buried in the Edit menu in XCode 3.0; and I have a question, which is, what happened to the "find selected text in same document" operation, something I used all the time in 2.5 and miss dearly in 3.0. Maybe I just don't see it.

The menu item you're referring to appears to be called "Find Selected Text". It's below "Find Next" in the Xcode 2.5 (and earlier) Find menu, but missing from the Edit -> Find submenu in Xcode 3.0.

You can still use Cmd-E (Use Selection For Find) and Cmd-G (Find Next) to get the same functionality, although it's two (standard) keystroke shortcuts instead of one (user-added) keystroke shortcut.

You'll see that 3.0 has fewer top-level menus and menu items than 2.5. This was deliberate, to keep the Xcode menu bar and menus from growing too large and cumbersome/intimidating. In some cases, menu items were removed when it was determined that the given functionality was seldom used or could be accessed in other ways.

For instance, in 3.0, there's no longer a "Rename" menu item under the File menu, which could be used in 2.5 to rename a selected group or file in the project window. Most people didn't even know it was there and used the Rename menu item in the group/file contextual menu. In 3.0, you can also just click on the group/item name and get an edit text box without needing to resort to a menu item at all.

If you want a particular menu or menu item back the way it was, file a bug, but we do have to balance features and visibility against complexity.

On the whole I like the re-org in XCode 3.0, but the omission of "Find Selected Text" is very annoying. I used to have this mapped to Command- H in earlier version of XCode so that it works the same as in BBEdit and various other editors that I use. It's really jarring to have to switch between using Command-H everywhere else and Command-E + Command- G in XCode 3.0.

Thanks for listening.

Paul

P.S. "Find Selected Text" doesn't necessarily need to be a menu item - I would just like the functionality back and to be able to bind Command-H to it.
