For a while now I have always recommended Python as a first programming
language.
OS X can run Python in a Terminal window, but there are two GUI Python
Integrated Development Environments you can run on a Mac - the
cross-platform IDLE, and one other who's name escapes me that is native
to Mac.
You can download these and find lots of tutorials at http://www.python.org/
As for books, I recommend starting with Learning Python, which is
published by O'Reilly.
If you get really good at Python, you can get a job at Google - much of
their software is written in Python.
