Smalltalk comes with an excellent GUI debugger. Norm Green I would even go so far as to say that using _javascript_ with Dashcode would be an excellent way for a beginner to learn a lot of things - it includes a very nice source level debugger, interactive console, GUI layout, lots of "pre made" parts, not to mention learning the whole "event oriented" design and as well as currently hot technologies (AJAX). Widgets are good "small projects" and can then easily be shared with friends.
