Unable to save files after perforce checkin/checkout

I was using perforce with P4V, checked in files, lock shows up on file icons in Xcode, then checked files back out but I can not save any files now. I get the informative message "The document "filename" could not be saved". If I open the file in an external text editor such as BBEdit I can modify and save the file. If I "rename" the file within Xcode and modify the file I can save. And if I rename it back to the original file name I can still save. I've restarted computer, removed xcode pref file, and done clean build. None of that allows me to save a modified file in Xcode. What am I failing to reset in Xcode to allow it to save again?
