I just got an e-mail from a user in which he points out that Activity
Monitor has creator signature '????'. I can't tell you why he noticed
that, but he did. I know that little sample code applications and
such don't warrant having a registered creator signature, but
Activity Monitor doesn't fall into that category. Is there any reason
I shouldn't file a bug for this?
I'm not aware of any utility provided by the Creator Type in
applications that don't have documents.
I'm sure it's not news to you but:
A long time ago in a far far away API,
In the Mac OS system, there was a very old OSType Master named
ProcessManager who could tell what was running even if it was not
visible. He used some kind of magic called the File Creator. He
sometimes sounded strange to new Intel Units as he used to swap bytes
when he spoke and you had to do some translation.
There are some who believe that he's still alive even after a dark tech
note named TN2034 tried to wipe the OSType order out from the surface
of the API.
There are also rumors that an OSType apprentice named LaunchServices
API can use the File Creator to locate applications.
Oh by the way, on Mac OS X 10.2.8, Activity Monitor has a
CFBundleSignature "pvwr".
I somehow sense a regression in the OS.
My 0.02 GC.
