I created a 'virgin' account and indeed, terminal functions quite fine
there. I tried copying the com.apple.Terminal.plist from the virgin
account to my main account through the shared folder, but when I tried
to copy it to my desktop in the main account, there was an error with
regard to permissions in some of the fields of the dictionary.

However, I lit up Terminal in the virgin account then switched to my main account, started Terminal and lo and behold, it started up with the bash prompt and executes my .term file elegantly.

I remain, baffled but functioning,
Joseph

Is it possible you accidentally put/left something in your ".login", ".bashrc", etc. files that cause your shell to exit?

I've done that several times to no effect. I've also rebooted after trashing the .plist file.
When I do view window under the file menu,
Shell: is listed as "Shell Name"
and there are no entries in "Currently Running Processes" in the processes panel.

I'm suspicious about /usr/bin/login

In fooling around with .term files, I somehow messed up terminal so that It shows the title "Completed Command" and never shows a shell prompt.
I've tried trashing the .plist file to no avail. No response to a hard reset, control-l, control-c or commmand-. I've set preferences to log in with /usr/bin/login but get the same response with /bin/bash. Any ideas how to get it to show a prompt.
Remove or edit the terminal preferences in
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist (from memory, path may be
wrong).
