compilers are programs too, and compiler developers, while more
skilled than the average developer, are mere mortals like the rest of
us.
Compilers have bugs sometimes. I've seen it a number of times. I
once wrote some perfectly valid C++ code that, depending on the length
of certain symbols, caused Apple's old cfront MPW port to either
generate incorrect code, or crash while attempting to compile it.
