One thing I forgot to mention: try opening an existing AppleScript Studio
project and compiling it.  There are a zillion of them in
/Developer/Examples/.  Use the standard procedure of making a copy and
opening the copy.

If a copy of an existing example fails the same way, I would question where
the copy was placed, and whether that location might be cause of the
problem.  E.g. a symlink or alias to Desktop, a permissions or ownership
problem, etc.  So make a copy in /Users/Shared/ and see if it works from
there.  If so, then go back and look at the failing location.
