If gcc is borked, none of the examples from /Developer/Examples/ will work.
If a specific hmap file is invalid, you'd have to compare to one that works
to see what any differences might be.

If the virgin account makes the problem go away, then it's quite likely
that re-installing the OS will NOT fix the problem. Unless it's a complete
overwriting reinstall that kills all the existing accounts.
But if you're going to do a complete OS reinstall just to kill the
accounts, it's a much simpler task to NOT reinstall the OS at all, but just
create a new account and transfer existing data files to it. That would be
the smallest amount of work that solves the problem at hand, without
creating other problems like how to recover the entire machine
configuration (except the broken account).

You may have to provide specific instructions on what "double-check"
entails. Poking around at pathnames is not something that casual users
know much about. It often takes a certain amount of Unix experience and
related diagnostic skills. That's not a slam on you, your friend, or
anyone. It's just a recognition that the Unix experience and diagnostic
skills I learned as a junior sysadmin, lo these many years ago, are quite
useful in figuring out WTF issues that crop up on Mac OS X. It doesn't
always help in figuring out what the problem is, but it sometimes helps in
figuring out what it isn't. Occasionally, knowing what something isn't is
a big clue to figuring out what it is, or at least finding where its lair
is, where you can kill it.
