Thanks everyone. Using CLI shark instead of sample did the trick,
kernel tasks and all.
I'm hopeful that the information will now be able to help the original
developer track down the problem at hand.

Just to add to this, Shark's Time Profile works by sampling in the
kernel. That way, the sampling happens on _everything_ running on
the system. This includes the kernel, kexts, and processes. You
should be able to use CLI shark to collect a session, reboot the
machine, and then copy the resulting session file off the system so
it can be analyzed on another machine.
