I read somewhere that turning off IPv6 may cure this type of problem.

Yes, I get the same thing. Maybe it's a feature to let you go and
fetch coffee... at least, that's what I do instead of staring at
the pinwheel ;-)
I've had this in the past and tried attaching with gdb to see where
it was stuck... turned out to be trying to look up the local machine
name (NSCurrentHost(), something like that?). That problem was
caused by a bad DNS setup. Might be worth checking your network
setup, or at least going offline and see if you get the same problem.
