I also noticed the weird drawing artifacts. The real problem for me is
that text is drawn without sub-pixel anti-aliasing. This makes text in
a layer-backed view look really awful.
I think if I end up using layer-backed views I will be only turning on
wantsLayer programmatically just before an effect and switching it off
afterwards.
