Yes -- to expand slightly on what Rick said.
Gcc uses a precompiled header format that is extremely sensitive to
the exact layout of structures and data in memory; think of it as a
relocatable core dump. While the chance that minor version changes
would cause a format incompatibility are exceedingly small, the
results when one *does* happen is really quite terribly dysfunctional.
So, it was decided that distcc would err on the side of "always give
the correct answer".
