In CAD/CAM/CAE software, we let the user set a paging
over-lap percentage, and I've done similar things with text
editing (both for paging down a file, and cascading windows
-- allowing them to set both the x and y off-sets in pixels
in the latter case).
It sounds like another place where the user should have control.
