I've had this once due to misspelling of one of the output files of my targets (so the output file was always "out of date" according to Xcode as it didn't exist, and it always rebuilt the target). It took me several weeks before I finally found this out.


is there a way to log Xcode's dependancy info to see why it thinks everything need recompiling?

No, but feel free to vote for rdar://problem/4612802 (which is my radar with a request for this) by filing a duplicate bug report.
