Can someone explain why one would choose to run Xcode in 32- or 64- bit mode?

It will (practically) never run out of memory in 64-bit mode, and may run slightly faster on 64-bit Intel Macs. I see only one downside to running 64-bit apps, and that is, they're slightly slower on PPC64.

Is there some reason why it doesn't just pick the right one for the hardware?

I'm not quite sure why Apple made it default to 32-bit mode, actually...
