To make the Xcode developer tools fully relocatable is actually a hard problem to solve, since there are some features that require pieces that get installed into the base OS (distributed builds is one, so is Dtrace/Instruments integration).

These components that need to be installed into the base system are part of the "Developer Tools System Components" choice in the Xcode Tools installer. You'll need to install that to enable distributed builds, Instruments/Dtrace integration, and the CHUD tools.

However (aside from the CHUD tools) it is intended that the contents of the "Developer Tools System Components" choice are backwards- compatible with 3.0 and later versions of the developer tools.

So, for example, when you install the GM version of the Xcode 3.1 developer tools, distributed builds and Dtrace/Instruments integration should continue to work with the Xcode 3.0 developer tools installed in a custom location.

I used the option in Xcode's installer to change the location of the /Developer folder to /Xcode300 (as I envisage keeping multiple versions around). I also turned off the option to install the CLI tools into /usr and friends as I want to remove any dependance on the non /Xcode300 rooted versions.

Having done so, Shared workgroup builds do not work to or from this machine. An alert comes up pointing to the release notes and sure enough /usr/bin/distccd is not there. (which makes sense I suppose)

Is it possible to set up Distributed builds if CLI are not installed and Xcode is not installed in /Developer?

Thanks
